A scenario planning and trend forecasting project exploring how LEGO can design for accessibility and inclusion in a rapidly evolving, phygital play ecosystem.
What I noticed
LEGO has long inspired creativity, imagination, and learning through play. But as play becomes increasingly digital and connected, I became interested in how accessibility and inclusion might evolve alongside it. The project began with a simple question: How might LEGO become more accessible and inclusive in a phygital world?
As I explored emerging technologies, shifting consumer behaviors, and changing expectations around inclusive design, I noticed that accessibility was often treated as an addition rather than a foundation for future play experiences.
What I explored
Using futures thinking and scenario planning, I explored how social, technological, economic, environmental, and political shifts could shape LEGO’s future over the next 15 years. This process led me to explore: multi-sensory and tactile play experiences, collaborations with disability organizations, customizable and adaptive play systems, sustainability and ethical innovation, the relationship between physical and digital play.
Rather than focusing on a single solution, the project explored multiple future possibilities and the broader implications they could create for participation, accessibility, and imagination.
What took shape
The project evolved into a speculative framework imagining more inclusive futures for play. One of my biggest takeaways from this project was understanding how scenario planning can help designers move beyond immediate solutions and imagine long-term possibilities for change and create conditions for more inclusive futures.
